Here’s another throwback photo from the 1990’s in Qingdao. The old window shops were the original convenience stores, open late and always right in your neighborhood because they literally were opened by your neighbors.

First floor residences that had windows facing streets with foot traffic were converted into shops. You couldn’t actually enter the shop, instead you just walked up to the window and asked for what you wanted.

In this image, the bare chested (and fit!) Qingdaonese is handing over a bag of frothy goodness in the grandest of Qingdao traditions – Tsingtao Beer in a plastic bag. Straws available upon request.
