Zhang Quan will perform his brand of Chinese folk music at Freeman Cafe and Bar on April 23. Born in 1968 in Lanzhou (Gansu), Zhang spent his childhood in rural Gansu and Qinghai listening to the popular folk music of Northwest China. Having once served as a long-distance bus conductor, he now concentrates on art as a painter and musician who has worked in Sichuan, Tibet, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and released 2 recordings of his live shows around China.
From 1995 to 2003 Zhang Quan was in the band Wild Children, before moving to Yunnan in 2004. Since 2006 he has toured around China performing and taking in the sights on his own personal long march “at the bar, in the village, in the street, on the road. Zhang mainly plays a Chinese instrument called Dongbu La and harmonica, performing tracks including the re-interpretation of his early works and traditional folk songs.
