In 2008 the NBA’s longest running rivalry was renewed when the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics met each other in the NBA finals for the first time since 1987. The highly anticipated and much hyped 2008 NBA Finals ended badly for Kobe Bryant and his Lakers, who lost to the Celtics in 6 games. This year that rivalry has returned after a one year hiatus and now Kobe is determined to prove his team can beat the aging Celtics. After proving last year that he could win that highly coveted Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy without Shaq, Kobe is now seeking his 2nd NBA Championship title in a row.

Over the course of the NBA Finals the Celtics and Lakers have met 11 times with the Celtics winning 9 of those match-ups. Both teams have constantly been battling for the record of who owns the most titles, and currently the Celtics hold 17 titles while the Lakers hang on to 15 titles. The big question this year is who will add to their total? Will the Lakers shorten the gap to 1 or will the Celtics widen the gap to 3?

History aside this year’s NBA Finals should prove to be an exciting one, as both teams are stacked with immense talent and superstars who know when and how to show up for those memorable clutch final moments. The Celtics are powered by the Big 3 (Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen) who have proven together that you can’t rule out the aging superstars of the league. However this year the Big 3 have had help from their youngest superstar Rajon Rondo who has fueled these Celtics down the playoff stretch with chants of MVP behind him. On the other hand you have the Lakers who are fresh off last year’s championship led by the always hungry Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest clutch players to ever play the game. Kobe can’t do it alone and will lean on Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and the X factor Ron Artest to deliver some physical play to battle it out with the always tough Celtics. My prediction: the Celtics upset the Lakers in 7, even though almost everywhere else everyone has the Lakers in 7.
