The chance to set up his family for life is the reason Joel Griffiths has been granted a release from Sydney FC to join Chinese Super League club Qingdao Jonoon.

As revealed exclusively on The Australian’s website on Monday night, the veteran striker will be released from the final year of his contract with the Sky Blues to sign a two-year deal that will almost certainly be his last as a professional player.

Griffiths is understood to have told his teammates of his decision late last week with the club officially confirming his departure yesterday.

“Joel has asked for a release from the final year of his contract and we have decided to allow him to pursue other opportunities,” Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata said.
