Great list of Qingdao schools for teaching, from http://www.eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/review/index.pl?read=43533:

….. Qingdao would be a good place to work, and I would recommend it if you want to be near the sea. It’s possible that, as a result of being an Olympics venue it went up-market, and you could find much of what you would expect in a large cosmopolitan city.

Generally I would agree with many of the comments on this forum about working for any of the franchise schools, and that would include Hampson. But I will say that this is all based on second-hand experience in my case. People differ in their expectations and options. There may be some tolerable options in the private language school sector, but you will need to do a lot of background research. People seem to have fewer problems working in the state sector, especially universities, and I would not consider working in a language school. I would doubt that any of the Directors of Study would have more breadth and depth of experience of education than me, and I would find it impossible to take direction from a former meat-packer from Cleveland. If this sounds arrogant, I apologise, but others have related their negative experiences with some of these people. Be very wary of individuals whether Chinese or expat who want to micro-manage your teaching. It will not only be soul-destroying but will zap your energy and enthusiasm.

Here’s an incomplete list to get you started:-

In choosing a university to apply to, check if they have any special government status (like Ocean) as these tend to be the better choices. They are usually better resourced, attract a higher calibre of students and teachers and expect higher standards from all. Besides, you want some free time to enjoy the environment, and universities are not slave-drivers.

    Universities

Ocean University of China: International Education Center (Best choice)
International Business College of Qingdao University
    Qingdao Technology University
    Qingdao University
    Qingdao University Medical College
Qingdao University of Science and Technology

    Language schools

    AMIO International English Plaza
    Around Asia Foreign Language School
    Furen Academy (Ken’s)
International House ( Don’t know if this is the same establishment that had a very pleasant school on the first floor of the hotel I stayed at, but remember that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover)
    Joy Children’s English School
Qingdao Elite Foreign Language School (Yinglian Foreign Language School)
    Qingdao English First (EF)
Qingdao Great Wall Foreign Language Training Center
    Qingdao Leewen Foreign Language School
    Qingdao Success Foreign Language School
Qingdao World Exchange College of Language (WECL)
    Wall Street English
    Web International English
    World International English School

My arrival in Qingdao and start at China Ocean University had been a total disaster. They hired me in Germany, promised a lot and kept nothing. The International Office of this uni put me in a sub-standard apartment, insuffciently furnished and damaged furniture and a kitchen that is dirty so that I do not want to prepare my meals there. I have tried to discuss and resolve the issue with the administration. After that turned out to be in vain, I told them that I would not sign the contract. I am now looking for another teaching job (German or English). I have a Z Visa that will expire on April 22. If you know anything or have a job offer for me, please leave your contact details here.

have heard some bad things online about them… not sure if it’s accurate but seems this school really tries to take advantage of unwitting laowai…

Need Teachers for New School in Laoshan:

HAPPY TALK is a unique place on the Bay of Sha Zi Kou, (just outside of Qingdao center) where you can enjoy a book and Wi-Fi at SPR Coffee, join a workshop or the academy, and meet new people. Only a few blocks away, you can also go for a walk on the peaceful beach front where the fishermen arrive with the day’s catch or go for a hike on Mount Laoshan.

At HAPPY TALK, you will find people all ages. Children can play, teenagers can hang out, adults can socialize, and all can practice English and learn. The idea behind Happy Talk is that learning or improving English can be more enjoyable if practiced naturally, than by deliberate study.

HAPPY TALK will officially open on March 1. It will start with Weekend classes first and then spread to the rest of the week based on Qingdao’s market needs. We are now looking for paid part-time teachers to help with the Happy Talk Academic Program.

Anyone interested, please write to Karen Wang at nswe.hr@gmail.com.
