Folk at Freeman

Coming up December 5 at Freeman Cafe: An Evening with Chinese folk musicians Chen Zhi Peng and Wang Zhen Chi.

Chen Zhi Peng was originally trained as a painter, and in 1996 he started making music. In 2000 he joined the band Ye Haizi (Wild Children) on percussion, adding to their rich folk sound with his drumming and samples of sounds of nature. Beginning in 2008 Chen started experimenting with visual arts, and contributed compositions for a film. This year Chen has worked with Jet Li’s foundation called Yi Ji Jing, aka One, and also appeared at the Songzhuang Art Festival.

Wang Zhen Chi was a founding member of the band Zhi Wu Ren in 1999. He left the band in 2001 and spent the next year travelling around China to places like Dalian, Xiamen, Chengdu, and Lhasa to find new musical inspiration. In 2003 he moved to Dali, Yunnan, where he continues to explore local folk music.

Owners Chris Yang and Li Tao always bring really talented musicians to Freeman, this time is no exception.

December 5, 8:30 PM at Freeman, 163 Jiangxi Lu.
