Zhang is one of the best indie-folk artists around and incorporates many elements into her work. I’m always impressed with her fluttering vocal style and well judged sense of tempo that keeps slower songs full of subtle energy. She is is also well known for being more extroverted than her contemporaries.

On September 22, families in China will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie/中秋节).

Happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival / Zhong Qiu Kie Kuai Le / 中秋节快乐

This September 22, families in China will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie/中秋节) to mark the 15th day of the 8th month on the Chinese lunar calendar. Traditional folk tales about the festival tell of immortals, longevity pills, 10 suns, Hou Yi, Chang’e, and her rabbit (see below for the full story). One of the special features of the holiday in China is the frantic gifting of mooncakes, from friend to friend, boss to employee and customer, children to parents and back again. The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is also known for poetry about the moon, particularly by Li Bai and Su Dong Po. The festival is very important in Korea, where it is called Chusok, and has been compared to harvest festivals such as Thanksgiving in North America. The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is a time for family and friends to look up at the moon and reflect on our place in the world in relation to each other as we all focus on the same object, the Moon.

Information on the legend of Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (from Wikipedia)

One version of the legend states that Houyi was an immortal and Chang’e was a beautiful young girl, working in the palace of the Jade Emperor as an attendant to the Queen Mother of the West (the Jade Emperor’s wife). Houyi aroused the jealousy of the other immortals, who then slandered him before the Jade Emperor. Houyi and his wife, Chang’e, were subsequently banished from heaven. They were forced to live on Earth. Houyi had to hunt to survive and became a skilled and famous archer. At that time, there were ten suns, in the form of three-legged birds, residing in a mulberry tree in the eastern sea. Each day one of the sun birds would have to travel around the world on a carriage, driven by Xihe, the ‘mother’ of the suns. One day, all ten of the suns circled together, causing the Earth to burn. Emperor Yao, the Emperor of China, commanded Houyi to use his archery skill to shoot down all but one of the suns. Upon completion of his task, the Emperor rewarded Houyi with a pill that granted eternal life. Emperor Yao advised Houyi not to swallow the pill immediately but instead to prepare himself by praying and fasting for a year before taking it. Houyi took the pill home and hid it under a rafter. One day, Houyi was summoned away again by Emperor Yao.

During her husband’s absence, Chang’e, noticed a white beam of light beckoning from the rafters, and discovered the pill. Chang’e swallowed it and immediately found that she could fly. Houyi returned home, realizing what had happened he began to reprimand his wife. Chang’e escaped by flying out the window into the sky. Houyi pursued her halfway across the heavens but was forced to return to Earth because of strong winds. Chang’e reached the moon, where she coughed up part of the pill. Chang’e commanded the hare that lived on the moon to make another pill. Chang’e would then be able to return to Earth and her husband. The legend states that the hare is still pounding herbs, trying to make the pill. Houyi built himself a palace in the sun, representing “Yang” (the male principle), in contrast to Chang’e's home on the moon which represents “Yin” (the female principle). Once a year, on the fifteenth day of the full moon, Houyi visits his wife. That is the reason why the moon is very full and beautiful on that night. This description appears in written form in two Western Han dynasty (206 BC-24 AD) collections; Shan Hai Jing, the Classic of the Mountains and Seas and Huainanzi, a philosophical classic.

Epiphone guitars have been made in Qingdao by Gibson since 2002. Find out more here.

Epiphone has been making musical instruments since 1873 and guitars since 1928. All of the guitar players in The Beatles were satisfied Epiphone owners, and Paul played one on the solo for Taxman. Owned by the Gibson Guitar Corporation for more than fifty years now, Epiphone guitars have been made in Qingdao since 2002. Following are excerpts from an interview with Qingdao plant manager Scott Lewis and Gibson Qingdao general manager Lloyd Williams from the Epiphone official website. Learn more about the Epiphone guitar experience on the very popular user forums on the Gibson website.

On the differences between making guitars in the US and China:

Lloyd: I would have to say that in many respects the American and Asian facilities are much more alike than not. Making a quality guitar is the same no matter where you do it. In your garage or on the factory floor, you have to use quality materials, skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail. Though there are differences in some of the production processes between the USA and Asian factory, to be successful the end results must be the same, a quality built guitar that musicians want to play.

On the team in Qingdao and their work:

Scott: Currently we employ approximately 550 employees with 450 of those doing direct labor. As a team we have made some great strides that I am very proud of. Several bench marks have been reached including recently reaching our highest production month ever, an internal reduction of departmental reject’s and repairs to less than 5%, a reduction in backorders from over a year to one month and growing our production capabilities to include high end solid top acoustics and other key models such as the Casino, Les Paul Custom Signature models and others.

On making Epiphone guitars in Qingdao:

Lloyd: We are Epiphone employees, we are an Epiphone factory so therefore we take ownership of our guitars in a way that no OEM produced brand can do. We have access to proprietary manufacturing techniques from Gibson and we can be innovators in the development of new models and features which is not always in the interest of our OEM competition.

On music and guitars in China:

Lloyd: Absolutely, Rock n Roll appeals to people from many cultures and the Chinese are no different. They have embraced it with both hands and feet! China is changing at an unbelievable pace and I believe Rock n Roll is its soundtrack.

Super boy band Super Junior will make the teens swoon in Qingdao on August 28 at Guoxin Stadium.

Super boy band Super Junior will make the teens swoon on August 28 at Qingdao’s Guoxin Stadium. Super Junior formed in 2005 and remain hugely popular in Asia especially among young female listeners who are attracted to the ensemble format popularized by performers like Backstreet Boys et al. The band has been through controversial lineup changes made by their parent company SM Entertainment Group in South Korea, such as the sub group Super Junior M created for the China market in 2007. Chinese singer Han Geng has been an integral part of this K Pop phenom since its debut. The appearance of Super Junior at the South Korea pavilion at Expo 2010 resulted in stampeding and unconfirmed reports of a casualty. Qingdao fans are advised to exercise appropriate caution at the upcoming show.

The 2010 Olympic Sailing Cities Mayors International Sailing Summit Forum issued the Qingdao Declaration on International Sailing Sports.

The 2010 Olympic Sailing Cities Mayors International Sailing Summit Forum was held recently in Qingdao. Here is the full text of the Qingdao Declaration on International Sailing Sports as posted on the Official Website of the International Sailing Federation:

At the invitation of Qingdao Municipal Government, more than 200 representatives from over 20 countries and regions participated in the 2010 Qingdao International Sailing Week and attended the Olympic Sailing City Mayors & International Sailing Summit Forum from August 21 to 23, 2010. Under the theme of “Dancing Sails, Eternal Blue”, we have exchanged in-depth views on the development trend of international sailing sports and reached consensus on strengthening exchanges and cooperation among countries and regions, as well as popularizing and enhancing international sailing sports.

We hold that the success of the Sailing Competitions of Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games has greatly enhanced the popularity and development of China’s sailing sports. The development of sailing sports in China, a country with 1.3 billion people, will exert a positive influence over the improvement of sailing sports worldwide. The First Olympic Sailing City Mayors & International Sailing Summit Forum held fruitful discussions and exchanges within the international sailing community, which is of great importance to inheriting the Olympic legacy and enhancing cooperation in sailing sports among countries and regions. We suggest that, under the guidance and with the support of the International Olympic Committee, the International Sailing Federation, the International Association of Disabled Sailing and sailing federations of different continents, and on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, cooperation and win-win development, the Forum be cultivated into a brand name and platform for the exchanges and cooperation of international sailing sports.

We see that, with the impetus of modern Olympic Games, the sailing sports is getting increasingly popular in coastal countries and regions. At present, the sport has reached over 120 countries and regions. Large-scale sailing events such as the American Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race, the World Match Racing Tour and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race have far-reaching influence around the world and sailing sports has become one of the most passionate and dynamic water sports and a significant bond of international sport cultural exchanges as it enhances cooperation and friendship.

We stress that the future and hope of sailing sports rest on the young people. We call on capable countries and regions to carry out persistently the popularization of sailing knowledge and events for the young people, to improve the planning and infrastructure and to create a better environment by establishing junior sailing clubs, specialized schools and training camps. International sailing organizations should send excellent coaches to the developing countries to improve the skills of their junior sailors, thus raising the overall capability and establishing a talent reservoir for world sailing sports.

We advocate that the competition system of world sailing sports be upgraded through holding successful international events. Asian countries and regions, in particular, should be encouraged to host more international sailing events and emphasize the popularization and promotion of sailing sports. More technical and personnel guidance and support should be provided to Asia to make the continent with 30% of the world’s land and 60% of the total population a center of global sailing sports.

We hope that all countries and regions will make concerted efforts to advance coordinated development of sailing with tourism, culture and sports, strengthen cooperation in sailing exhibitions, tourism and manufacturing technology, and increase people-to-people exchanges in science and technology, education and other fields. We hope to bring the young people and sailors closer via diversified sailing activities, thus promoting world peace, unity, friendship and progress, and ushering in a bright future of vigorous sailing sports.

Tsingtao Beer reports that profits are up. Recent reports of increased profits are rife with statistics that thrill the actuary in us all. High end beer – Laoshan perhaps? And if Tsingtao is China’s second-largest brewer by volume, anyone know the first?

From Xinhua via Sina

Tsingtao Brewery Co., China’s second-largest brewer by volume, said Monday its profit for the first half of the year climbed 29.74 percent year on year as sales of its high-end beers surged. Net profit totaled 830 million yuan (122 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months as sales increased 9.3 percent to 9.81 billion yuan. Earnings per share rose to 0.614 yuan, up 25.56 percent from a year earlier, the brewer said in a statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The company attributed the profit growth to strong demand for its high-end beer and saw a rise of 26.7 percent in sales of the high-end beer from January to June.

The brewer said it would increase production and continue to implement its current marketing strategy in the second half to snare a larger market share. The company will also “actively look for” merger and acquisition opportunities in the second half to expand its presence in the beer market, the statement said. The company’s A-shares dropped 0.03 percent to open at 35.81 yuan per share Monday.

Chicago TV personality Nancy Loo recently visited Qingdao and learned to love this "geographical gem".

Chicago TV personality Nancy Loo recently visited Qingdao as part of a production team filming around the city all that the “geographical gem” has to offer. Nancy writes “Sharing the incredible story of Qingdao is the reason I’m here.” She returned to Chicago very impressed and shared her impressions of Qingdao on her blog Big Tiny World at ChicagoNow.com. Here are some of the good things this newly converted fan of Qingdao has to say about the little fishing village that grew up to be China’s Sailing City.

From How Now Qingdao

The city of Qingdao was just a fishing village when German troops stormed in and took over in the winter of 1897. It was in retaliation for the killings of two German missionaries elsewhere in China. The German occupation and eventual lease deal with China came to an abrupt end when Japanese troops surrounded this geographical gem in 1914, forcing the Germans to surrender. China didn’t regain full control of Qingdao until after WWII.

Today, Qingdao is a major resort city with a population of over 8.5 million. It’s bigger than Chicago and yet it’s considered a medium-sized city in China. Tourists from other parts of Asia vacation here regularly along with many Germans because it’s like an Asian Riviera. It’s busier than ever since Qingdao hosted the sailing events during the 2008 Olympic Games. But there are very few American visitors. And most Americans have never heard about Qingdao’s fascinating history. The German influence is everywhere here. Many neighborhoods feel quite European. The Germans also established a major brewery which continues to produce Tsingtao Beer. Sharing the incredible story of Qingdao is the reason I’m here.

From Mountains of Mourning in China

What an ideal day for our production shoot up in the mountains. Laoshan is a beautiful and peaceful place for reflection. The geologic formations are stunning and the spring waters are clean and clear. On the way back, we stopped at China’s first European-style winery. I had no idea such a place existed. Probably because none of the wines from Huadong Winery are exported. The vineyards and grounds actually reminded me of Napa Valley in Northern California.

From Xie Xie Qingdao

It’s been an incredible ten days in Qingdao. I admit, I came to work on a television production and would never have considered coming here on my own. But there has not been a single day that I haven’t been impressed by everything this city has to offer. And I’m convinced this stunningly beautiful region of Shandong Province, with a fascinating history, will soon be discovered by more American visitors.

The trio performed a set of originals and topped it off with a cover of the Cher song Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) popularized by Nancy Sinatra (h/t Ryan Blocher) and featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.

Straight out of Beijing’s underground music scene, check out Lazy Camels at the REDSTAR on August 27. The band plays what Neil at REDSTAR calls ” rock and roll of the very highest calibre. Vitriolic, punchy, edgy and full of ideas. Think of the quiet-loud dynamics that did so much for grunge in the 90s, but with the quiet bits very quiet and the loud bits oh so very, very loud. In short, they are pure chaos.”

Designers in Hong Kong have planned a skyscraper for Qingdao that would clean the air through its very existence.

Designers in Hong Kong have planned a skyscraper for Qingdao that could clean the air through its very existence. Coated with titanium dioxide, the proposed building’s skin would supposedly chemically react with the air to destabilize toxins and change them to oxygen and water. The tower would even glow indigo at night, powered by solar energy taken in during the day. Rooftop gardens and built in wind turbines to capture energy add to the total green effect of the structure. Still in planning stages, with more research to be done, the project is still a welcome mention of things to come in a Qingdao going green.

From Boston.com’s Braniac

Minimal environmental impact is all the rage, but two Hong Kong-based designers say that even no-impact structures are insufficient. Skyscrapers could and should actively clean up the air, they say.

Frederick Givens, an architect, and Benny Chow, a specialist in sustainable building design, presented their version of this concept in Issue 2 of the journal Evolo. They call their brainchild the “Indigo Tower.” Envisioned for Qingdao, China, a city with particularly bad air quality, the tower would have a skin featuring a nano-coating of titanium dioxide. When smog hits the skin, sunlight would trigger a chemical reaction that would neutralize grease and toxins, with oxygen and water as byproducts.

The building’s signal feature is that this chemical cleansing would continue at night. Photovoltaic panels would capture enough energy from the sun to allow the production of indigo light (near the UV portion of the spectrum) during evening hours. The purple light that would let the chemical reactions continue would be visible for miles: “The indigo glow will become symbolic of the cleansing, counteracting the yellow haze that dominates the daytime hours.”

The building’s proportions and facade are also designed for maximal, er, greenness. The surface, whose texture is supposed to evoke that of the titanium dioxide molecule, has been fashioned to focus and increase wind speed across the skin, wind that would also power turbines. Gardens spaced at regular intervals up the structure would serve as public spaces, and also collect water produced by the chemical reaction.

Givens and Chow say they have developers who are, at the least, “interested in furthering the research.”

The date 7-7 on the Chinese lunar calendar is known as Chinese Valentine's Day and this year it falls on August 16th.

The date 7-7 on the Chinese lunar calendar is known as Chinese Valentine’s Day and this year it falls on August 16th. Also known as Qixi (七夕) and in English, Magpie Festival or Double Sevens, it is a traditional folk holiday celebrated in China and Chinese communities around the world. The story of Chinese Valentine’s Day is a legend of forbidden love between an otherworldly being (Zhinu) and a mere mortal (Niulang). They are separated on every day of the year except the 7th day of the 7th lunar month when they are allowed to meet in the heavens on a bridge of magpies. Read a classic version of the story on ChinaPage.com.

A simplified version of the tale as told to Valentinian:

There were 7 fairy daughters of the Emperor of Heaven, who could visit the Earth but could not stay there and since they were immortal, could not fall in love with any of the humans. These fairies went back up to the sky with special umbrellas. One of the fairies however fell in love with a young farmer and they did not want to be apart, so he hid her umbrella so they could stay together. They had two children and were very happy until the Emperor found out and sent his daughter back up into the sky kingdom. Since she was so sad and wanted to see her family back on earth, they made one special day per year when a Bridge is formed between Earth and Heaven and she can come back across the bridge and visit. This day is the Chinese Valentine’s Day, the 7th day of the 7th lunar month of the year.

Scheduled to be done in 2011, the Qingdao Water City Expo Center should help propel the development of the suburb Aoshan Bay north of Laoshan along the Yellow Sea coast. NBBJ also designed the Sail on Donghai Lu (at the corner of Yan An San Lu). Read more about this project on the architecture blog ArchDaily.

An excerpt from ArchDaily about the new Qingdao Water City:

The first phase of the Qingdao Water City development at Aoshan Bay, designed by the Los Angeles office of NBBJ, will include a new exposition center of 1,940,000 sf. As the ocean sits to one side of the site, and a wetland on the other, a strong emphasis has been placed on how the exposition is shaped by its interaction and proximity to the water.

This exposition hall is an important component of the region and the architects feel it will act as “the stimulus for development within the entire city”. Set for completion in early 2011, the center will include 10 flat-floor expo halls, one multi-purpose hall, two lobbies, retail and a central outdoor expo plaza. The hall will serve as the center for international and domestic trade shows as well as host a variety of performances and large scale events

“The exhibition center design aims to create a sinuous atmosphere to induce associations of flowing water, while the “L” shaped program of the structure provides pronounced edges along the western and southern aspects of the development. Ultimately, the center will embody a gesture of welcoming, implicitly alluring visitors to the Water City development,” explained NBBJ.

Visitors will approach the main lobby, which leads to the different wings of the hall, and experience the reflection of the glass facade that alludes to a deep calm pool of water. An expansive outdoor plaza can be utilized as an exhibit for special events and as a park at all other times. The landscape will rely on natural foliage to minimize the need for irrigation and assist in the absorption of storm water.

The Qingdao Exhibition Center project team includes NBBJ as lead architecture firm and Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) as associate architecture firm.

Check out a new can design for Tsingtao Beer featuring Qingdao’s famous Zhan Qiao Pier.

Browsing through the beer section in Jusco, I happened to look up towards the top shelf where the cans of Tsingtao Beer are always chillin’. Instantly I noticed an unfamiliar design on one of the cans. This new design appears to be a special series of Tsingtao and possibly an ongoing theme introducing scenic spots in Qingdao. The new can prominently features Qingdao’s famous Zhan Qiao Pier in a classical style with the words ‘Scenic spots in Qingdao, Zhan Qiao’ written in a small cursive script.

My first thoughts were maybe this is actually a new special brew of Tsingtao Beer. The brewery uses different can and label designs in different markets around the world and offers commemorative cans to mark special occasions such as the 2008 Olympics and Chinese New Year, so perhaps this is a new summer series for collectors. The price for the new Zhan Qiao can is slightly more expensive than the original but the alcohol percentage is actually lower instead of higher (3.7% vs 4.3%).

Compared side by side with original Tsingtao in a can, there appears to be no major difference, as the beer in the new style can still has that same Tsingtao flavor but with slightly less alcohol content. So even though the new design is nice, I wouldn’t purchase it other than for its souvenir value, that is of course if you like beer as a souvenir or collect cans. Still, it’s nice to see a change in design on these cool new cans from Tsingtao Beer.
