Qingdao Double Star vs. Shanxi Zhongyu 1.18

The Qingdao Double Star Eagles lost to Shanxi Zhongyu in Qingdao on January 18, 2012. Former Double Star star Charles Gaines returned for his new team Shanxi and with the help of Marcus Williams erased an 18 point deficit in a 110-106 win over home team Qingdao. Eagles point guard Lester Hudson (second in scoring in the CBA) notched 45 while Olumide Oyedeji added a 25 point 15 rebound double double in the losing effort. There was a questionable call at the end of the 4th quarter when Gaines fell down with the ball on a breakaway and got back up for a lay-up without being called for traveling – many fans were not pleased and engaged in language that necessitated the use of loud music to shoo away the swearing. It was all to no avail as Double Star fell to 12th place in the CBA. Qingdao’s next home game is after the Spring Fest break on February 5 against the Beijing Ducks and Stephon Marbury.

Here’s the recap from Asia-Basket:

Rather predictable result when eighth ranked Shanxi Zhongyu (13-10) beat on the road 11th ranked Qingdao Double Star (11-14) 110-106. Qingdao Double Star was ahead by 15 points at the halftime before a 70-51 second half run of Shanxi Zhongyu. They made 29-of-36 charity shots (80.6 percent) during the game, while Qingdao Double Star only scored thirteen points from the stripe. Shanxi Zhongyu forced 25 Qingdao Double Star turnovers. Strangely Qingdao Double Star outrebounded Shanxi Zhongyu 55-34 including a 36-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. 29 personal fouls committed by Qingdao Double Star helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Charles Gaines notched a double-double by scoring 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead the effort and the other American import swingman Marcus Williams supported him with 37 points (!!!) and 5 steals (perfect from the field making all eleven shots !!!). Even 45 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds by American guard Lester Hudson did not help to save the game for Qingdao Double Star. Nigerian-British power forward Olumide Oyedeji added 25 points and 15 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) for the hosts.

Foshan’s standout foreign player is Marcus Douthit, who was drafted by the LA Lakers in 2004 but never played a regular season game in the NBA. The Dralions (also called Long Lions) are coached by former NBA player Jay Humphries.

World Judo Grand Prix Photos

The 2011 World Judo Grand Prix was held in Qingdao from December 16 to 18, 2011. The International Judo Federation tournament took place at Guoxin Arena in Laoshan district for the second year in a row. Winners received points for qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.

The Qingdao Double Star Eagles take on Jiangsu Nangang Dragons at home in Qingdao on December 16, 2011. The Eagles, fresh off an upset win over J.R. Smith and the Zhejiang squad (box score), are still stuck at the bottom of the league with a 3-8 win loss record. Jiangsu is not faring much better this year at 3-7. Jiangsu has been through a bunch of roster shuffling this season and recently added Jackson Vroman and former UConn standout Marcus Williams in a bid to live up to pre-season expectations. Come out to cheer on the Double Star Eagles (Shuang Xin, Jia You!) and the CBA’s league scoring leader, Lester Hudson (pictured above).

2011 World Judo Grand Prix 12.16-18

The 2011 World Judo Grand Prix returns to Qingdao on December 16-18, 2011. The Grand Prix will be held at the same place as in 2010, the “Diamond”, Guoxin Arena (next to the Qingdao Sports Center Stadium) in Laoshan district. Download the event’s official presentation for more details including the daily schedule.

More than 600 judoists from over 60 countries are scheduled to compete. The event in Qingdao is the final Grand Prix of the year. Qingdao’s importance on the circuit is emphasized by the awarding of greater points here than at any other event this year. Winners will receive 200 points towards qualification for the 2012 London Olympics (compared to 100 points at this year’s previous events).

The competition begins December 16 at 10 am, after the official weigh in at the Haitian Sports Center Hotel at 7 am. The opening ceremony will be held in the morning on the 16th at Guoxin Arena. There will be daily awards ceremonies after each final. The organizers will disburse prize money totaling 100,000 US dollars during the 3 day event.

Athletes around the world will again be confronted on the tatami of the Judo Grand Prix, Qingdao 2011, to win a medal. The Grand Prix of Qingdao is also the last major event of the year, which will determine the final 2011 world ranking list that will allow us to invite the top 16 athletes per weight category to participate in the World Masters, Almaty 2012.

The Qingdao Hash House Harriers are on the road again, this time to check out the Silver Beach in Xuejiadao, a part of the Huangdao Development Zone, or Kaifaqu (开发区). Run number 231 will commence from a location to be announced in Huangdao at 1 pm, so there’s an early start from Crowne Plaza Qingdao at 11 am. Alternatively, make your way over the bay via the new tunnel or bridge and meet up in the Development Zone. See below for details.

The next Qingdao HHH run is Saturday, June 4, 2011 – meet at Crowne Plaza 2 pm. This marks run number 226 for the Qingdao Hashers, dubbed a “mystery run” with a beer stop and hills. See below for details.

Dear Hashers,

Run Number 226 is a mystery run. There will be a beer stop. There will be hills. There will be three highly motivated virgin hares. There will be a group of confused and somewhat drunken hounds. What else? Who knows? Be there or be square!

Hare: Pleases the Court, He Jie and Xiao Ya. Three virgin hares, but not three virgins !

Meeting time and place: Meet at Crowne Plaza at 2:15 pm, we leave there at 2:30 pm SHARP. We will take bus no. 321 to the front gate of Number Two Middle School, Lao Shan District Campus. The run will start at the front gate, near the bus stop. For those who wish to meet us in Lao Shan directly, please be at the Number Two Middle School bus stop on Song Ling Road at 3:15 pm SHARP!!

Hash cash: Usual 10 RMB.

The 2011 NBA Finals Live on CCTV5

In 2006, both the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks faced each other in the NBA finals for the first time ever in either team’s history. Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs went up 2-0 to start the series but with the help of Shaq and a young Dwayne Wade, the Heat won the next 4 games straight to clinch their first ever NBA title. This year, after both teams struggled since their 2006 finals appearance, the stage is set again for a finals rematch. Will Nowitzki finally be able to bring Dallas its first NBA title or will the “Big Three”(Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh) repeat history and bring Miami its second NBA title?

The next Qingdao HHH run is Saturday, May 28, 2011 – meet at Crowne Plaza 2 pm. This marks run number 225 for the Qingdao Hashers. For the first time in Qingdao HHH history, there will be a live hare to chase on the run. See below for details.

We have a very special run for this Saturday. Size 5 Balls will lead us on the ultimate in hashing experience: LIVE HARING ! No boring pre-set run for Size 5 Balls. She will be setting a diabolically clever trail as she runs through the streets of beautiful Qingdao, pursued by a pack of ravenous hounds, eager for the glory of capturing the whimpering hare before she achieves the safety of the On In. What will happen if she is caught? No one knows!! She treats the prospect of being caught with contempt. You will have to be the one who catches the hare in order to find out what happens next. It is the ultimate hash mystery. Size 5 Balls promises numerous beer stops during the run and a gala after the run event where she will gloat over her successful conquest of the hounds.

The 2011 Double Star Sudirman Cup in Qingdao is one of badminton’s biggest events in the world. May 25th featured matches in the group stages with Israel, Seychelles, Netherlands, Iceland, Poland, Hong Kong, and more batting it out at the Qingdao Sports Center in Laoshan district. News on the championship competition including results and tables can be viewed on the official website. Check out some photos from the sports center on May 25 below.

The next Qingdao HHH run is Saturday, May 21 – meet at Crowne Plaza 2 pm or Ocean University Laoshan campus main gate at 3:20 pm. This marks run number 224 for the Qingdao Hashers and will include cherry picking in the Beizhai area of Laoshan. This week’s run costs the usual 10 yuan (RMB) plus cherry picking fees of an extra 10 to 20 yuan. See below for more details.

The May 21 run will be lead by our faithful Stray Dog. He has sniffed out a wonderful run in the Laoshan cherry orchards. After our run we can all do U-pick cherries and then have a nice dinner in the countryside. Departure from Crowne Plaza at 2:15 SHARP !! No waiting because it’s a long bus ride. We will take bus 125 until the last stop at the Ocean University main gate. For those who want to go direct from Laoshan or Li Cun, please plan to meet us at the main gate at 3:20 pm SHARP !!

What is Qingdao Hash House Harriers?

The Qingdao Hash House Harriers are a chapter of world-wide phenomenon The Hash House Harriers, a loose running group also known as the “Drinkers with a running problem”. Hashing originated in December 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting on Monday evenings to run, in a fashion patterned after the traditional British game of “Hare and Hounds” or paper chase, to rid themselves of the excesses of the previous weekend. The original members included Albert Stephen (A.S.) Ignatius “G” Gispert, Cecil Lee, Frederick “Horse” Thomson, Ronald “Torch” Bennett and John Woodrow. A. S. Gispert is recognized as the Father of Hashing, and All-Around Grand Master-Hasher.

What’s the aim of the Hash House Harriers group?

To promote physical fitness among our members
To get rid of hangovers
To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer
To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel

Here in Qingdao, every week the Qingdao Hash House Harriers jog, walk, crawl and run a 60 to 90 minute fun run. They follow a trail marked with flour laid out by “hares” which ends at a “Down Down” circle. In Summer, they also embark on monthly “Hash Run Specials” – an out of town run, in the countryside, gone for the whole day, enjoying the beauty and ruggedness of Mother Nature. The cost for weekly regular runs is between 10-20 RMB and for out of town special runs is between 50-70 RMB that includes all the beer you care to drink, water and transportation.

What: Running outdoors. Always in different parts of Qingdao.
When: Every week on Saturday. For exact details please initiate contact.
Where: Meet at 2PM in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, or as specified in the details.
Who: Open for anyone!
