The traditional tang yuan eaten on this holiday are usually filled with sesame, red bean, or peanut paste. Variations on fillings are many – Jusco and/or Carrefour offer a great selection of pre-made and ready to make tang yuan though a local small traditional restaurant might supply more authentic flavor during Lantern Festival.

Welcome the Year of the Dragon in Qingdao, China. The Chinese New Year parties officially begin January 22, 2012. Xin Nian Kuai Le !!!

Welcome the Year of the Dragon in 2012 in Qingdao, China. The Chinese New Year is here.

Chinese New Year’s Eve, or Da Nian Sanshi, is January 22, 2012. The following day is the actual New Year’s Day, called Chu Yi. The Spring Festival arrives in Qingdao once more. Check out more info and photos below, including a video from Youku of an ear numbing display of fireworks in China.

Happy New Year – Xin Nian Kuai Le – 新年快乐 !!!

Firecrackers And Other Artillery

The firecrackers are most intense around midnight, right when everyone is getting ready to have the jiaozi (dumplings) made for the special occasion. Eating jiaozi is a must on the eve of Da Nian 30 – as are the massive firework pyrotechnics that sometimes stretch to dawn. The first and last evenings of Spring Festival are the heaviest fireworks nights.

Usually before people start to have the formal dinner on New Year’s Eve, they set off firecrackers for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Door Couplets (dui lian/对联)

These Spring Couplets are seen on doors, usually with black characters on red paper. The short benedictions wish those entering the door prosperity, good fortune, health, wealth, and more. Many older people still gather a crowd at an informal dui lian market to write the traditional couplets. Check out more info on these poetic Spring Festival Distiches.

Jiaozi, Sticky Rice And Special New Year’s Foods

Spring Festival is a time to eat with everyone you meet, from the feast of New Year’s Eve to the meals shared over the first few days of the year as people visit family and friends. The most important food of the festival is jiaozi. Many people put a few coins into some of the dumplings to represent good luck and fortune.

The tail end of the Spring Festival brings Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao Jie/元宵节), which is celebrated with tang yuan, a sticky rice ball in a sweet broth, with fillings of peanut, sesame, red bean, and more.

Eating sweet tang yuan on the night of the first full moon of the lunar year is symbolic of happiness and peace.

Lantern Festival

There is a myth about why people hang red lanterns on Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao Jie/元宵节). Long, long ago there were many horrible beasts in human society which did nothing but hurt people. People got together to kill these beasts but accidentally a holy bird got lost in human society and was killed by mistake.

The Emperor of Heaven was very angry and ordered a big fire to be set to punish people. But his seventh daughter was too kind to see people suffering because of her father’s rage, so she came up with the idea of having people hang red lanterns everywhere to recreate the atmosphere of fire. Thereafter, people started to celebrate this day with the hanging of red lanterns.

Eating sticky rice dumplings (tang yuan) is the most important custom of Lantern Festival. The Chinese people want everything to have a happy ending, so eating sweet tang yuan on the night of the first full moon of the lunar year is symbolic of happiness and peace.

Little Chinese New Year (Xiao Nian/小年) will be celebrated in Qingdao on the last half moon of the year on January 16, 2012.

Little New Year (Xiao Nian/小年) will be celebrated in Qingdao on the eve of January 16, 2012. The date is the last half moon of the year on the Chinese lunar calendar. The event connected to the Kitchen God is a traditional holiday that signals the beginning to the impending Spring Festival.

It’s an almost mandatory time to be with one’s family – expect huge traffic jams on the way home for the Little New Year. The Rabbit will be sent off here in Qingdao with the festival required jiaozi a week before Spring Festival and the Year of the Dragon.

Little New Year signals a slowdown in work as people are rushing about taking care of last minute preparations for the fireworks and feasts to come during Chinese New Year, so expect your office/school/factory to be winding down as well in the run up to one of the largest celebrations on Earth.

More information on Chinese Little New Year from China.org.cn:

Little New Year, which falls about a week before the lunar New Year, is also known as the Festival of the Kitchen God, the deity who oversees the moral character of each household. In one of the most distinctive traditions of Spring Festival, a paper image of the Kitchen God is burned on Little New Year, dispatching the god’s spirit to Heaven to report on the family’s conduct over the past year. The Kitchen God is then welcomed back by pasting a new paper image of him beside the stove. From this vantage point, the Kitchen God will oversee and protect the household for another year. The close association of the Kitchen God with the Lunar New Year has resulted in Kitchen God Festival being called Little New Year. Although very few families still make offerings to the Kitchen God on this day, many traditional holiday activities are still very popular.

Another year over, a new one just begun. Enjoy the New Year's Eve celebrations in Qingdao.

Happy New Year 2012 from QINGDAO(nese).

Another year over, a new one just begun. Enjoy the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Qingdao. There will be parties and countdowns to midnight at entertainment venues all over the city, including in Huangdao, Chengyang, Laoshan, and more.

If you’re in Shinan district and looking for a place with lots of music, drinking, and general merriment, check out the triangle of bars on Jiangxi Lu: ssLPG, Freeman, and Charlie’s. Just around the corner are the loud and youth oriented clubs Rain, Feeling, and Bund No. 1. The Corner Jazz Bar will be a popular late night destination – it’s on the corner of Minjiang and Minjiang Er Lu (aka Coffee Street).

Zhonglian Plaza (intersection of Ningxia and Nanjing Lu) has a handful of bars and clubs that will be rocking until early in the morning of January 1st. Try Vivi and Ye Chao for the biggest crowds. Angel and Time Bar are also in this large complex near the East West elevated highway.

On Hong Kong Middle Road, check out Club New York (near intersection of Fuzhou Lu) and Q Bar in Shangri La for bands and drinks specials until late 2011/early 2012. Restaurants including La Villa and Terrazzo will have specials on drinks and food to celebrate the coming of what some say will be our last year on the 3rd rock from the sun.

Forget 1999, party like it’s 2011. If you really believe the end is nigh, indulge yourself. And even if you are not sure about the end of the world, at least there’s a party tonight.

In Huangdao Kaifaqu, ring in the new year 2012 on the bar street (Wuyishan Lu). Check out Catch-22 and the Oriental Saloon for gatherings of expats and local friends.

Jiangsu is not faring much better this year at 3-7. Jiangsu has been through a bunch of roster shuffling this season and recently added Jackson Vroman and former UConn standout Marcus Williams in a bid to live up to pre-season expectations. Come out to cheer on the Double Star Eagles (Shuang Xin, Jia You!) and the CBA’s league scoring leader, Lester Hudson (pictured above).

From the Qingdao HHH official website: “Here in Qingdao, every week the Qingdao Hash House Harriers jog, walk, crawl and run a 60 to 90 minute fun run. 劲松七路 (Jìnsōng qī lu) is the name of the bus stop on Yin Chuan road, over near the big Etsong/Conson stadium. From Crowne Plaza, we will take bus 314 which leaves over on Fuzhou road so we will have to walk a few meters. Other bus lines that go there are 223, 312 and 381.

Shi Lao Ren Residents: If you prefer to wait at the above bus stop, please keep in mind that it’s hard to say when exactly the rest of the pack will reach there and anyone who will wait there will have to do so in the cold weather so please be appropriately dressed/prepared. We estimate an arrival time of around 2:50 to 3 PM at Jinsong Qi Lu stop!

There WILL be a warm place for our circle and dinner – not to worry

Run starts at 3 PM SHARP.

Plan to attend? Please RSVP here.

More Info:
After running along almost every trail on the southern side of Fushan, this run will finally bring us to the northern side of that little mountain. After getting out of the bus along Yin Chuan Road the trail will lead along some of Qingdao’s local forests, small ponds and creeks. There might not always be a proper street or path for us, so some climbing might be needed. The run will finish up in the urban area nearby and there will be a restaurant to warm up. It is not an A to A run.
