Recently Gar sent in the following submission asking, “For a trifecta trio i’m cooking up, is there any chance you could come up with a picture of a SUPERNOVA? Some kind of extraterrestrial brilliance-type of picture. I have a great recording to go along with one.”

We helped him find the photo of the supernova and then married the music to the image. After that, effects were added and a video uploaded to Youku. Creative and chaotic to the nth degree, Gar ponders the universe in the holiday season.

More info on TNT production of Midsummer Night’s Dream:

Shakespeare’s most popular comedy deserves its reputation, for here the “lunatic, the lover and the poet” combine with the magical world to create a perfect mix of comedy and romance. The play was written in 1596 as a celebration of a marriage and remains a timeless exploration of love in all its wonder and foolishness. It is also a fertility rite and a blessing on the children that love will spawn. Its conflict is rooted in the battle of the sexes. Our production begins by dramatising the conquest of the Amazon Queen by Theseus and links the final comedy of Pyramus and Thisby to the drama. The fairy wood is a dangerous place, dangerous and exciting in the same way that Theseus’s Athens is dangerous and sterile. Shakespeare happily mixes traditional English spirits with classical heroes and fantastic creatures. What unites these traditions is paganism and that energy lies at the root of our production. Bottom is perhaps Shakespeare’s greatest clown. In our production he will be played not just as a man consumed by vanity, but as a man trying to understand love without understanding himself.

The production will combine music, dance and song with powerful conflict that demonstrates not just the joy but also the pain and madness of love. The play is full of energy and that energy will be released through more than words. Too often the play becomes an excuse for easy laughter and is neither believable nor are its themes and characters united. We will attempt to unify the themes and characters and link the serious with the comic to create an original but faithful version of Shakespeare’s finest comedy.

About TNT:

TNT theatre was founded in 1980 in Britain and since has established itself as one of the most popular international touring theatre companies in the world. Last season alone the company produced seven productions in almost thirty countries worldwide, ranging from Shakespeare classics such as ROMEO & JULIET to their own new play HITLER KILLED MY CANARY, from works by contemporary artists such as Paul Auster’s MOON PALACE to the classic seasonal show: Dickens’ CHRISTMAS CAROL. Since 1993 the company has been in collaboration with the American Drama Group Europe.

The artistic director of TNT is Paul Stebbings, whose work has won many awards at, for example, the Munich Biennale, the Edinburgh Festival, the Tehran Festival and from the government of Singapore. Other notable festivals in which the company has participated are the International Off-Broadway Festival in New York, the Tokyo International Theatre festival and the summer festival of the British National Theatre. TNT has also collaborated on co-productions with major venues such as the Athens Concert Hall and the St Petersburg State Comedy Theatre.

The company style aims to integrate all the performing arts. TNT productions always include a specially commissioned score by a leading composer. The director always works with a choreographer and the ensemble actors are chosen for their ability to cross the disciplines of theatre, music and dance.

Excerpts from TNT Britain – An Introduction and Manifesto by Paul Stebbings:

In 1980 three unemployed actors borrowed a small car and set off on a tour of Britain. They called the company TNT – The New Theatre – and by 2008 that same company is known as “the most popular theatre company in the world” (China National TV) performing in over thirty countries on three continents in 2008 alone.

The same principles that made The London Guardian call the “the most interesting development on the current theatrical scene” back in TNT’s first year are present almost thirty years later as indeed are two of the original members: director (then actor) Paul Stebbings and dramaturg Phil Smith. TNT present a dynamic actor based style of theatre that rejects television based realism in favour of fantasy, imagination, physicality and a muscular approach to serious text. We also like a good laugh. Since 1984 TNT have been exploring music theatre and every production includes a new score. TNT’s first composer was John Kenny and he is still with us. Paul Flush and Thomas Johnson compose for the company too.

We are a physical theatre company, and all the original actors trained in the Grotowski method in Britain and Poland. We aim to combine all the performing arts. TNT’s choreographer since 1992 is Eric Tessier Lavigne.

TNT invented a word “audiencentric” – theatre is for you, our public. The relationship essential in our theatre is not between actor and text, or actor and actor, or actor and director or even designer and director but actor and audience. Simple. And the greatest weapon in TNT’s armoury is your imagination, not ours.

Theatre is a language, we happen to be English so we use a lot of English.

We perform anywhere to anyone … our technical requirement is an audience.

We share a vision of theatre as a global force for positive change: live art for all.

Lin Mei (梅林) was born and raised in Qingdao. She studied art from the age of 5 and attended Number 6 High School (Guanxiang Er Lu in old town) to continue her art journey. She later majored in environmental art design at Jiangnan University. Lin Mei has worked in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as studying animation and graphic design in Australia. She says Melbourne is a really arty city, art is everywhere, it encouraged and inspired her to create more artwork.

At the moment, she works in a digital advertising agency, and freelances on the side. Beside creating illustrations, she can’t live without reading. Her favorite bookstore is Xueyuan Bookstore located on Gaomi Lu (behind the Dongfang shopping mall on the corner of Jiaozhou Lu and Zhongshan Lu. Life drawing in Badaguan is her long time habit. (PS: Qingdao beer rocks!)

Sui Jianguo (隋建國) is an artist from Qingdao based in Beijing. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His works include large sculptures of the iconic Mao suit, aka Zhongshan fu (中山装), one of which was previously on display at the Qingdao Sculpture Park, since removed (though the box frame from the original work is still there, pictured below). Other well known works by the artist are huge fiberglass toy dinosaurs and various installations with rocks.

More on Sui from Artzine China.

He didn’t create a Mao suit sculpture until he went to Australia as a visiting scholar. During a discussion with some other scholars there, Sui says someone said they could not understand the Chinese people. And Sui says he responded with a joke about how Chinese wear the same clothes, eat the same things, but are very different inside – and you can’t always see that.

“I said, ‘They wear western clothes now, but inside they all have their own inner Mao suit.’”

“It is the beginning of the 20th Century, and deep in the heart of the Dunhuang Caves an old Taoist Priest watchman is doing his rounds of the Mogao Grotto. Suddenly he stumbles upon an unknown cave full of Buddhists Documents. He picks one up and as he slowly unrolls it, he discovers a painting that would take him on a compelling and touching journey back in time.

Young painter Mogao proceeded to Dunhuang in pursuit of the highest realm of lofty thought in art. On his way to the desert he was wounded, and his life was in danger. A passer-by heroine Yueya saved him, Not long after, they met again at Dunhuang and fell in love. The Great General (Yueya′s father) opposed their relationship and forced his daughter to choose a husband from among rich and famous men. Yueya decided to run away to seek her true love. They appointed to meet in the cave, but they were surrounded by the Great General’s army amidst blood and fire. Yueya saved Mogao’s life again, but she lost her life and turned into a spring. With great sorrow, Mogao used the spring water to embellish his pens and wrote a song of art at the Dunhuang caves. The Mogao Grotto and the Yueya Spring are still left in Dunhuang and they are immortal for centuries to come. Love and art will be together forever.”

TNT Theatre stages Much Ado About Nothing at the Qingdao Grand Theatre on May 11, 2011.

TNT Theatre stages a production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Qingdao Grand Theatre on May 11, 2011. The British theatre group is touring China this spring with a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy about 2 couples confused in love and marriage by themselves and those around them.

TNT founder Paul Stebbings has written that “Much Ado About Nothing throws down a challenge to the audience with its very title. What is this play? A comedy that is not always funny? A tragedy with a happy ending? A thriller even? Or is it a masque: that strange mix between symbolic drama and dance theatre that was to overwhelm English theatre a few years after Shakespeare’s death. I think the answer is yes to all these questions”.

Tickets range from 30 to 200 yuan (RMB) and are available at Creative 100, Building 3, Rm. 107 (enter at the door near The Book Nook). Call 8097.0303 for more information.

Excerpts from TNT Britain – An Introduction and Manifesto by Paul Stebbings

Simon Fox answers some questions about the Qingdao Panto for QINGDAO(nese).

Simon Fox answers some questions about the Qingdao Panto for QINGDAO(nese). Simon (pictured above on the left) has been a regular participant in the Qingdao Panto since 2008 and is well remembered for his cross dressing role in Cinderella. Find out more about Qingdao Panto, including how to help sponsor this community effort and the Qingdao Expat charity.

How did you become involved with Qingdao Panto?

I was in the audience of the 1st Qingdao Panto “Rumpelstiltskin” in 2007. My daughter [Lianne] took part in 2008′s production “Aladdin” and through ferrying her to and from rehearsals I got to know Tamara the director and other members of the cast and crew. When audition calls for “Robinson Crusoe” came up in late 2008 I could resist no longer!

What roles have you played and do you have a favorite?

My 1st role was “Swash”, half of the comic duo “Swash & Buckle”, a rather half witted Cornish pirate (disguised as a sailor) in Robinson Crusoe. Then last year I played ugly sister “Salmonella Hardup” opposite Tamara Studniski as “Listeria Hardup”. Both these roles were great fun, it’s very rewarding to be part of a double act. I think my favourite was “Salmonella”, it took me a while to get into character.. but once I was there I had trouble getting out again!

We have a great live band, very cool choreography, plenty of action, bizarre plot twists, multiple realities, corny jokes and suspect humour, bad guys, good guys and just plain silly guys… oh and a few surprises too.

Can anyone participate in the Panto as actor or crew member?

Absolutely, everybody is welcome at the auditions, whether you want to help behind the scenes or tread the boards yourself. There is a limit on the size of cast and crew required, so attending auditions doesn’t guarantee a part or position… it’s a meritocracy. We try to have a broad range of ages and nationalities, but obviously for acting roles good spoken English is very helpful.

Are Qingdao Panto actors paid for performing?

Good heavens NO! Taking on a part is a serious commitment and will completely take over your life for a few months, especially in the last 3 weeks before the performance. We all put a lot in and get a lot out, but we’re not in it for the money luvvies!

What has been the biggest challenge/satisfaction you’ve personally felt while working on the Qingdao Panto?

The biggest challenge is juggling my workaday life with the demanding rehearsal schedule. I also don’t have a natural aptitude for choreographed dancing, it takes me much longer to learn the moves than the younger performers. It’s a great feeling to be part of a big team bringing the show together and, hopefully, inspiring other cast members to push themselves to do their very best. During and after every show I’ve attended or performed in the audience have shown genuine joy and appreciation. It’s wonderful to know that you’ve been part of something that has brought laughter and joy to people’s day. Last, but by no means least, knowing that the money raised will improve, enrich and possibly even save the lives of children less fortunate in and around Qingdao.. that’s the icing on the cake!

Are you interested in directing in the future? Will you be acting indefinitely?

I do have an interest in directing but I can’t see it being possible while I’m still in fulltime work. Well, I have been known to declare that I won’t act next year… but that probably means next year! I don’t seem to need much encouragement to turn up at the auditions.

Early traditional panto productions were held outside – how does this year’s venue compare?

From an audience perspective, this year’s venue is by far the plushest, most luxurious and comfortable in the history of Qingdao Panto! In terms of performance it presents a few challenges.. there is no curtain or fly system and the stage isn’t as deep as would be ideal. But we have been truly blessed by the generosity of the Intercontinental Hotel Qingdao who have made their auditorium available free of charge and have bent over backwards to accommodate our rehearsal schedule and technical requirements. Director – Brandon Zerr-Smith has used the restrictions of the performance space to create a more stripped back, but still spectacular, show concentrating on stagecraft and using multiple simultaneously active roles in several scenes.

Knowing that the money raised will improve, enrich and possibly even save the lives of children less fortunate in and around Qingdao.. that’s the icing on the cake!

What can the audience expect in this year’s performance of Robin Hood?

Each Qingdao Panto is different to the last, by it’s very nature it’s influence and structure are both organic and transient. We yet again find ourselves with a lot of new talent, both on and off stage, which brings a vibrancy to the show. We have a great live band, very cool choreography, plenty of action, bizarre plot twists, multiple realities, corny jokes and suspect humour, bad guys, good guys and just plain silly guys… oh and a few surprises too. All in all it should be a lot of fun and a great way to support the Expat Charity.

Qingdao International Drama Group presents Robin Hood at the Intercontinental Hotel in Qingdao on May 6-8, 2011. The Qingdao Panto has been a fixture on the local arts scene since its first performance in 2007 of Rumpelstiltskin. Subsequent shows included Aladdin (2008), Robinson Crusoe (2009), and Cinderella (2010).

The pantomime has a long tradition in Britain and differs from its silent American cousin. Qingdao pantomime includes speech, song, and dance in a rowdy slapstick comedy manner that encourages the audience to vocally participate. Proceeds from the Qingdao Panto go to local charities associated with the Qingdao Expat Group. Qingdao International Drama Group is also known as the Qingdao Expat Drama Group.

The actors and crew for the Qingdao Panto (pictured in the collage above) need your help. Their efforts to build a better community through the arts includes charity work around Qingdao. Please see below for more information on sponsorship opportunities and how to help this year’s effort to put on the best panto yet. All donations are equally important – no matter how small, donations are always welcome from private sponsors.

More info from the Qingdao Expat Drama Group:

Our mission
Bringing dramatic arts, music, dance & comedy together to celebrate our international community and give something back to Qingdao and her people.

Brief description of our group
Qingdao Expat Drama Group was formed 5 years ago by expats living and working in Qingdao. The production team is made up of 6-8 volunteers, and the composition of that team is subject to change each year due to the transient nature of the expat community. While providing a stage for performing arts to develop in the community, Qingdao Expat Drama Group is also committed to charity work. Our objective is to raise money in support of the already established Qingdao Expat Charity, or other worthy local causes, through presenting live performances of pantomimes, music shows or drama/plays. The money collected will help to support underprivileged children in the Qingdao area. We have been able to raise funds to provide children with life-saving operations. The generous support of your company would make a difference to these people‘s lives!!

The performance this year will be Robin Hood, with a cast of around 40 people and crew of 15 to 20. The dates of the show will be from 6 -8 May, with 4 shows including matinees.

What we need
As much support as possible to raise charity funds for our community. This support can be in expressed in different ways, such as:

Offering different in-kind contributions (service or products) that will facilitate the preparation process and the performances of the show;

Offering different products that can be sold to the audience during performance and raise money for charity;

Donation of money which will be used for paying all the show expenses and/or fundraising for charity.
Whatever amount and kind of contribution is welcomed!!!

2011 Pantomime already has a theatre
The great news this year is that we have already found the first sponsor, which will offer the venue. The show this year will be in the Theatre of the Intercontinental Hotel. We consider this a great opportunity based on the wonderful conditions and location of this theatre.

The catalogue of advertising materials to offer our sponsors:

Shared opportunity to sell food and drinks before, during and after each performance (to be discussed further);

Recognition by the local community that the Sponsor supports local good causes.

How last year’s funds were used
The funds raised during last year’s Panto were given to Qingdao Expat Charity Group, which is a group of volunteers that has been assisting the Qingdao community for the last 10 years. QECG regularly cooperates with Qingdao Children’s Hospital Heart Centre, University Hospital in Qingdao, cancer diagnosed children and different primary, middle and high schools.

Its main aim is to assist children in rural areas in:

Offering financal assistance for heart surgeries and special medical treatments;

Assisting schools to build infrastructure;

Helping impoverished children to attend schools.

Among the most important achievements in 2010:

Financial assistance in order to receive medical treatment, surgery and medicine for 3 children;

Financial assistance for 1 child diagnosed with cancer;

Internal reconstruction of one school in Laixi, changing windows, doors, etc;

Four Generations Under One Roof by Lao She at the Qingdao Grand Theatre on March 16 and 17, 2011.

The stage production of Four Generations Under One Roof (Si Shi Tong Tang/四世同堂) will be performed at the Qingdao Grand Theatre on March 16 and 17, 2011. The drama, originally written as a novel by Lao She (老舍), depicts life for a Chinese family in Beijing during the time of Japanese occupation of Northeast China (aka Manchuria). The name of the play is often translated as The Yellow Storm. Lao She (1899-1966) has been affectionately called the People’s Artist in China and is considered one of the best Chinese novelists and playwrights of the post Literary Reform era. Lao She lived in Qingdao on Huangxian Lu in the early 1930′s, which is where he penned what is arguably his most famous work, Rickshaw Boy (Camel Xiangzi). Today there is a museum at his former home in Qingdao to commemorate the author and his work. The play Four Generations Under One Roof (with Mandarin dialogue heavy on Beijing accent) is now touring China after a successful debut in Taiwan last year.
