The 2011 Qingdao International Marine Festival opens July 23, 2011 with a concert and ceremony at Tiantai Stadium. Performers include China’s most famous Super Girl, Li Yuchun, and Korea’s latest teen pop sensation Wonder Girls. The annual Marine Fest (also referred to as the Ocean Festival) has become a fixture on the summer event schedule in Qingdao. This year’s festival takes place at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center adjacent to the Marina City shopping complex on Aomen Lu and runs for 18 days.

The 2011 China Qingdao International Marine Festival will kick off at Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center in Shandong province on July 23.

According to Wu Tiejun, assistant mayor of Qingdao’s municipal government, the 18-day festival will include 31 different activities of six categories: ocean culture, blue economy, navy shows, maritime sports, ocean science and ocean tourism. During the marine festival, four air travel routes will open in Qingdao. Tourists have the option of taking the newly introduced Eurocopter AS350 helicopter to get to the festival.

China Qingdao Marine Festival, co-organized by the General Administration of Sport of China, State Oceanic Administration, National Tourism Administration, Chinese Navy Headquarters and the Qingdao municipal government, is the only ocean festival in China. “China Qingdao Marine Festival has become one of Qindao’s many festival brands, which promotes the city to the rest of the world,” said Zang Aimin, director of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Qingdao Municipal Committee.

Cruise Out Of Qingdao

Qingdao is poised to become a well known port for cruise calls, with many ships either stopping over or departing from the Sailing City.

Reviews of the cruise experience have been mixed. China Daily reported that a Chinese couple taking a cruise on the Costa Classica from Shanghai-Seoul-Qingdao paid about 8,000 yuan for the trip and said it was “well worth the money.” A resident foreign national took a cruise on the same ship departing from Qingdao and rated the experience as less than expected, especially in light of prior positive experience on cruises originating in other places, such as Florida in the US.

China is turning the busy eastern seaport of Qingdao into the country’s third cruise terminal in order to tap the Chinese middle class’ growing appetite for luxurious ocean travel. Qingdao has already started working on a 1-billion-yuan ($153,846 million) project to build a cruise liner port and relevant facilities.

In the coming two months, 13 cruise liners are scheduled to dock at Qingdao, making it a formal cruise terminal for Costa Cruises’ northeast Asia routes and linking the city with Shanghai and the Republic of Korea (ROK)’s cities of Seoul and Jeju.

Qingdao is the third cruise terminal in China, after Shanghai and Tianjin.

In 2006, both the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks faced each other in the NBA finals for the first time ever in either team’s history. Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs went up 2-0 to start the series but with the help of Shaq and a young Dwayne Wade, the Heat won the next 4 games straight to clinch their first ever NBA title. This year, after both teams struggled since their 2006 finals appearance, the stage is set again for a finals rematch. Will Nowitzki finally be able to bring Dallas its first NBA title or will the “Big Three”(Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh) repeat history and bring Miami its second NBA title?

Qingdao musicians and fans of Nirvana singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain will memorialize the influential songwriter with live music tributes. On April 8, Qingdao bands including members of The Dama Llamas, Mr Cat, Firehouse, and Toad are planning to gather at Creative 100 (1F) to salute Cobain’s music and life. The following day, the Sailing Club bar (Xi Hai Ju Le Bu) next to the Ibis Hotel in Qingdao’s Huangdao Kaifaqu (the Development Zone between Huangdao and Xuejiadao) will be the scene of the 11th annual tribute to Kurt Cobain and the music of Nirvana, featuring local bands Ping Yuan Si Ji, Xian Qin, Empty, Dream Machine, and more.
