“We smile
Want to stay in place
Do not know
Time of the flood swept away confused us relentlessly
When we experienced the baptism of these years
Vicissitudes of human life
May have recalled that years of wandering and melancholy under the banyan tree
A kind of happy memory
It inadvertently hit a youth on the chord
Past the sun is expected to open eyes
Illuminate the night road guide the direction of the warm
People who pass by
Flowers that brightly blaze occurred in their life
Becoming all about you and me
Present and the future
My love blossom from the seeds of Love
Keep the story quiet securely
And continue to play back in
That year
Under the Banyan Tree”

In the band’s own words:
Maze: Stream of Consciousness rock band. Was born in nothingness, follow the consciousness of the slurry into the illusion of hidden whirlpool. Low vision, sound from a nuclear explosion like jumping into instant turmoil, all the dim sound of bursting after the burst of agitation in the given rise to redness of the skin, or in the icy silence of the steel strings, echo in the mountains between all the poetic depths of the sea to kill the moment.

Shandong Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010

May 1, 2010 in Events by Steven

The Shanghai Expo officially kicked off with a welcome dinner and a ganbei toast televised live on CCTV, and May 1st marks the first day the Expo is fully open to all visitors from around the world. The Shandong Pavilion is representing for Qingdao with the theme of “A Lush, Green Garden“. Since the general theme of the 2010 Shanghai Expo (official slogan “Better City, Better Life”) seems to be green (from logo color to landscaping to eco-consciousness), it appears Shandong is dutifully following the trend, and hopefully setting some too. The pavilion week for the Shandong Pavilion is July 8-12, so that might be a good time to head down and see if the Tsingtao Beer not brewed with Laoshan water lives up to its reputation. While there, sample the Reeb (that’s beer spelled backwards), try the Xiao Long Bao (a Shanghai specialty type of steamed bun that is quite similar to dumplings) at the Yue Gardens, ride the Mag Lev train (speeds up to 430 km/h), and climb the Oriental Pearl for some great views of Pudong and Puxi.

Check out the e-Expo website with a cool interactive 3D map of the Expo grounds.

Qingdao Postcards at Municipal Archives

April 30, 2010 in About Qingdao, Events by Marcus

Just yesterday Qingdao Municipal Archives opened doors on an expansive exhibition consisting of hundreds of historical postcards gathered from around the world over the past several years by local collectors. The postcards picture scenic landscapes, local daily life, historic buildings and monuments in and around Qingdao, mostly during the first half of the 20th century. The collection includes both privately owned postcards and some from the in-house permanent collection.

A few highlights include:

  • Women dressed in kimonos walking through the cherry blossoms of Zhongshan Park and then two large Shinto shrines built during the first Japanese occupation of Qingdao during 1914-1922.
  • A large German eagle epigraph carved in a cliff just below Signal Hill that is no more.
  • Traditional rural life in and around the Jiaozhou Bay area, including the large gates of Jimo which was a large walled-in city for many centuries.

There is also a short video near the entrance which includes footage of a horse race at what is now Tiantai Stadium (where Jonoon football club plays), as well as rural festivals around Qingdao. Unfortunately there are no translations of introductions and background information, but the images alone are a fascinating revelation of a Qingdao that once was. Also, on a side note, it does appear some of the supposed postcards are just copies, but a large percentage are certainly originals.

The Qingdao Municipal Archives is located on 148 Yanji Lu (延吉路148号) just east of the new Jusco/Wanda shopping center. The exhibition will be open daily from 9:00am-5:00pm up until May 31st and is free. View more information on the Qingdao Municipal Archives online.
